Hint: it has nothing to do with single-room humidifiers or air purifiers and everything to do with a full-house air flow control.
As I mentioned in last week’s blog, the typical home or other building has so many small holes and cracks in the walls and foundation that nasty outdoor and indoor pollutants are making their way into your lungs daily. To really rid yourself of those pollutants, there is a two-step process:
- Cut down on any air infiltration - make it tight! Using special sealant tapes called Tescon Vana, tape along seams, holes/cracks in walls and holes/cracks in windows and doors to ensure that there is no air loss leaving the house (which saves you money because you now have no lost heated or cooled air) or unwanted air coming in (meaning you’re no longer allowing polluted air into your home). This gives you more control over what you’re breathing – and more importantly what you’re NOT breathing. The tighter you build, the more you need a whole-home fresh air system. Also, the tighter you go, the better the fresh air system works. After all, you don’t want to provide fresh air if your building leaks like Swiss cheese! All of this leads us to step #2…
- Add a continuous, filtered fresh-air system. Now that your building is airtight, it’s time to add in fresh air with a Zehnder ComfoAir HRV/ERV unit! The whole house heat recovery ventilationsystem works continuously to extract moist, stale air from wet rooms (kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms) and supply fresh, filtered air to habitable rooms (bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms). Up to 90% of the heat in the extract air is recovered by the heat exchanger in the unit and used to heat the incoming fresh air. On average, people spend 90% of their time indoors, so clean indoor air is essential for optimum health.
This hand-in-hand solution compliments each other so well, especially when your ventilation recoups outgoing heat. No air leaking in from walls, coupled with 24/7 fresh air, adds up to superior air quality!
